Self-storage is often thought of as a place to store boxes and furniture that we no longer need. What if the thing you don’t use right now is your car? Vehicle storage is similar to regular storage. There are many options that can help protect your vehicle when it’s not being used. We’ve broken down the basics of vehicle storage. This guide will show you how to prepare your car for when it is ready to be driven off the lot.
What’s Vehicle Storage?
A vehicle storage unit is a self-storage unit that can house a car, or any other type of vehicle. It is similar to a garage or parking area that you rent in a self-storage facility. The benefits vary depending on which storage company you choose.
There are four main types of vehicle storage.
- Parking spaces that are not covered
- Parking spaces with covered parking
- Indoor units that are shared
- Individual enclosed units
There are many types of vehicle storage units available. They vary in price and utility. It is important to choose the right type for your car, especially if it is very valuable or an old.
What type of unit should you rent?
Each vehicle storage unit has its advantages and disadvantages. You will need to consider more than just availability, which is a crucial factor. It’s also important to consider what your vehicle needs.
Uncovered Parking Spaces
The vehicle storage unit is not an individual unit, but a space you rent for a specific period of time. They are typically located in a large, paved parking lot at the storage facility. The surface can be gravel, dirt, grass, gravel or a combination of both. Although you don’t have the protection you need from the elements, this is the most cost-effective way to store your car. You still have the security benefits of renting a storage unit. You can cover your car with a cover if you wish. This will protect it from the elements and pests.
Covered Parking Spaces
A covered parking space is a great option if you want your vehicle to be protected from the elements, such as rain and sun. They are usually housed in large car ports that are shared with many other vehicles. There is an overhead roof and open walls. Although this storage is not as secure as enclosed units, it can provide protection if you are concerned about being exposed.
Shared Indoor Units
These large warehouse lots can house multiple cars in an enclosed enclosure that is fully protected from the elements. These are a more affordable option than renting an enclosed unit. However, you will not have the same ease of access to your vehicle as if you were to rent your own.
Personal Enclosed units
Non-shared enclosed units are the most expensive option for vehicle storage. These units can be used as a garage for you vehicle. These units allow you to drive your car in and out without worrying about access. Many self-storage facilities also offer climate control and live streaming to your unit, so you can monitor your vehicle whenever you need it.
You need to store more than one car. Many self-storage facilities offer options for large vehicles such as RVs, boats and larger vehicles. To find out what is available, call your local storage facility.
What Does Vehicle Storage Cost?
The average cost of storing a vehicle or RV ranges from $45 per month to $450 per month, depending on which type of storage unit you rent and how big the unit is. If you plan on renting a climate-controlled unit, add $50 per month.
Get Your Car Ready for Storage
You can store your vehicle in vehicle storage until you are ready to use it again. However, you should take some precautions before storing your vehicle in storage. This is especially important if you intend to keep it there for more than a year.
- Take a maintenance look
If you plan on storing your vehicle for a while, it’s a good idea that you have some basic maintenance done. You should have your coolant levels checked and your tire pressure checked. It may also be necessary to change your oil and filter. Your maintenance provider should know that your car is going into storage. They will be able help you determine the best next steps. - Make sure to clean your car
It is up to you to decide whether you will wash your car before putting it in storage. However, you should at least clean the interior of your vehicle and get rid of any documents or titles that are not needed. You should also get rid of any food in your car, even if it isn’t at risk of spoiling.
- Buy a battery keeper
The battery keeper (also known as a float charger) will prevent your vehicle’s battery dying while it is stored. The float charger monitors the battery’s level and sends out power surges as necessary to keep it full. A float charger does not supply power when the battery is full. This means that you don’t need to worry about charging too high and you don’t have to worry if your car needs to be jumped.
- If your car is in an enclosed unit, crack your windows
There are worse things than a stuffy car. However, if you plan to use an enclosed vehicle, crack your windows to allow airflow and prevent the interior from becoming moldy.
